Selection Process of the 2013 JAGDA New Designer Awards

Prior to the judging sessions, this year's JAGDA Annual Committee, taking into consideration the opinions voiced to date by the JAGDA Annual Selection Committees, confirmed the following two points: 1) as a rule, designers with at least three winning works shall be nominated; and 2) the three designers with the most votes in the final round of voting shall be chosen to receive the New Designer Awards.

Among the 204 "new designers" (JAGDA members under 40 as of October 31, 2012) featured in the 2013 JAGDA Annual, a total of 33 individuals and one pair with at least three winning works were nominated for JAGDA New Designer Awards. (However, even if a designer has fewer than three winning works, if the designer won in an "integrated design category which allows exhibit that combine works from multiple categories," the designer may be eligible for nomination depending on the content of his/her works. This time, one person was eligible under this rule.)

Award nominees are as follows:
Chiaki Aizawa, Yasuhide Arai, Yuri Uenishi, Mayumi Uchida, Tomoya Kaishi, Yoshiyuki Kanesaka, Junya Kamada, Eriko Kawakami, Arata Kubota, Hiroko Sakai, Masao Shirasawa, Koichi Sugiyama, Shinsuke Suzuki, Shogo Seki, Mitsunori Taoda, Saori Takeuchi, Yoshihisa Tanaka, Ryoji Tanaka, Mina Tabei, Anri Namba, Kimitaro Hattori, Masaki Hanahara, Jun Haneda, Kentaro Harano, Atsushi Hirano, Rie Hiromoto, Junpei Fujita, Keisuke Maekawa, Koji Matsumoto, Ken Maruyama, Yumiyo Miyata, Yoshihiro Yagi, Yuni Yoshida, Tomohiro Watabe/Hisaaki Hirawata(33 people and 1 group/order of the Japanese syllabary)

All winning works by the nominees were grouped together by designer, and the 27 members of the Selection Committee undertook the preliminary round of voting, with each member allowed to cast up to 5 votes in total. The voting was carried out by paper ballot, and nominees' names were hidden during voting (with the provision that all voting members had to choose the full complement of 5 nominees).

A total of 10 designers garnered 4 or more votes, thereby becoming finalists.
The final round of voting, conducted by the same method, allowed the Committee members to cast up to 3 votes in total. This time, each Committee member selected which nominees he or she felt deserving of 1st, 2nd and 3rd places, again indicated on written forms (with the provision that all voting members had to choose the full complement of 3 proposed winners). This time, a 1st-place vote was worth 3 points, 2nd place 2 points, and 3rd place 1 point. It produced the following results: Yoshihisa Tanaka 33 points/15 votes, Atsushi Hirano 27 points/12 votes, Yumiyo Miyata 25 points/12 votes. The Committee members agreed to bestow the JAGDA New Designer Awards on these 3 new designers.
